Get Involved in the Discussion About Housing

Tacoma is facing a housing crisis. It is becoming more difficult to find housing we can afford, particularly for people with fixed or lower incomes. In response, the City is revisiting the rules governing housing development to allow more diverse housing types, often called Missing Middle Housing. The City is also exploring incentives to partner with housing developers to create affordable housing in rapidly growing areas. The intent is to increase housing supply, create affordable housing options, and increase the choice of housing types throughout our neighborhoods.

The Home In Tacoma Project is guided by the policy work done through Tacoma's One Tacoma Comprehensive Plan, Affordable Housing Action Strategy and Equity Index. The project continues recent efforts to expand housing choices, including Tacoma's Accessory Dwelling Units Updates.

Tacoma's Residential Infill Pilot Program has recently been updated to invite a new round of proposed infill projects.

Ways to Participate

Through Spring 2021, Tacoma’s Planning Commission is asking the community to join in a discussion about housing needs, development trends, zoning, and neighborhood change. Using community ideas and feedback, the Commission will make recommendations to the City Council for Comprehensive Plan, Zoning, and Land Use Regulatory Code amendments.

The survey is now available in Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian, and Khmer
