Taxi & For-Hire Drivers

The City of Tacoma requires that all for-hire drivers maintain a current For-Hire driver license, a For-Hire Vehicle license, and a current City business license while operating within the city limits of Tacoma.

 

For-Hire Taxi Driver License Application Process 

 

Step 1: Review driver requirements before applying. 

 

Step 2: Complete Fingerprints for Background Check 

The City of Tacoma requires applicants to complete a fingerprint-based background check.  Fingerprints will be used to check the criminal history records that are kept by the Washington State Patrol and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Fingerprint services are scheduled online and available by appointment only at South Sound 911.   

 

 When scheduling a fingerprint appointment online, select City of Tacoma Business License as the purchase option.  Fingerprint fees are paid directly to South Sound 911. Visit southsound911.org/fingerprints for more information.

Step 4: Complete City License Application Forms

For-Hire Vehicle Application (Required unless leasing a vehicle from affiliated company)

 

Step 5:  Apply for City License

Apply in person at 747 Market Street, Room 212, Tacoma WA 98402.  Bring with you at the time of application the following forms:

  • Proof of completion of City approved Defensive Driving Program
  • Proof of completion of Driver Training Program & Fee $25
  • For Hire Intent Letter
  • For Hire Driver License fee:  $50
  • General Business License Application and fee

Applications are accepted between Monday - Wednesday 8AM - 4:30PM, except holidays.  Once your license is approved, you will be notified to pick up the For-Hire driver card at the Tax & License office.
