Taxi & For-Hire Drivers

The City of Tacoma requires that all for-hire drivers maintain a current For-Hire driver license, a For-Hire Vehicle license and a current City business license while operating within the City limits of Tacoma.


For-Hire Taxi Driver License Application Process 


Step 1:  Review basic driver requirements before applying


Step 2:  Fingerprint Card  

If opting to have the City conduct a full background check, for- hire taxi drivers must  be fingerprinted.  A fingerprint card can be obtained at South Sound 911, located at 945 Tacoma Ave, Tacoma.   The fee for the fingerprint card is paid directly to South Sound 911.  You will bring the fingerprint card with you when applying for your for-hire driver license.

Step 4: Complete City License Application Forms

For-Hire Vehicle Application (Required unless leasing a vehicle from affiliated company)


Step 5:  Apply for City License

Apply in person at 747 Market Street, Room 212, Tacoma WA 98402.  Bring with you at the time of application the following forms: 

  • Completed applications form
  • For Hire Driver Intent Letter 
  • Fingerprint Card 
  • Proof of completion of City approved Defensive Driving Program
  • Proof of completion of Driver Training Program 
  • Washington State Drivers License
  • Check/Money order made out to Washington State Patrol for $58
  • Payment for license fees (cash, check, money order or credit card)

 Applications are accepted between 8:00 am-4:00 pm Monday - Friday, except holidays.


Step 4: Approval of License

Once your license is approved, you will be notified to pick up your For-Hire driver card at the Tax & License office. 


Step 5:  Done-Ready for business
