The Neighborhood and Community Services Department works to build healthy and successful neighborhoods and households through the protection of human rights, code compliance, community problem-solving, and indirect and direct services which include human services and services for the elderly and youth.

Community Services works to further the City's goal of creating and maintaining safe, clean, and attractive neighborhoods by engaging the community and ensuring that City services are aligned with community priorities.  The Community Services Division includes staff from Community Based Services and Code Compliance.

Community Based Services works to build partnerships among all City services to address community problems and coordinates programs such as Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED), Adopt-A-Spot and Community Clean-up programs.

Code Enforcement is responsible for ensuring that property owners maintain compliance with the Tacoma Municipal Code to protect the health, safety, and welfare of Tacoma's residents.

Human Services implements the City's human services initiatives and oversees the numerous non-profit programs under contract with the City to help meet the needs of Tacoma residents. The non-profit programs funded by the City strengthen our community by working to provide the vulnerable populations such as the seniors, persons with disabilities, victims of domestic violence, people experiencing homelessness, mental illness or substance dependency with needed services such as food, shelter, treatment and safety, increase adult self-sufficiency by education and employment services, and help our youth overcome barriers to success and develop the skills necessary to become productive citizens.

This division of NCS also addresses the needs of homeless individuals and families by encouraging the development of strategies for linking persons served to available housing resources or helping them develop the resources and skills to be more stable in their housing.

Programs include Gang Reduction, Homeless Housing First, Mental Health and Chemical Dependency and Senior Citizen Services.  The Human Services Contracting Section oversees the contracts for non-profit programs funded by the City.
