City Council Vacancy Appointment Process
Notice is hereby given that the City Clerk’s Office is accepting applications, with cover letters and résumés, to fill the City Council At-Large Position 7, for a term to expire December 31, 2023. This At-Large position represents the entire City of Tacoma.
Application Materials and Notices
Applications must be received by the City Clerk’s Office no later than 12 Noon on Thursday, July 7, 2022. Applications are available from the City Clerk’s Office online (see the links below), by emailing cityclerk@cityoftacoma.org, or by calling (253) 591-5505.
Interviews
Candidates will be interviewed on Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at 12 Noon at the City Council study session, in the Tacoma Municipal Building, 747 Market Street, City Council Chambers, on the first floor. In-person attendance is preferred, but remote options are available.
Qualifications for Office and Responsibilities of the City Council
The City Charter provides that those seeking appointment to the City Council must be a qualified elector (have the ability to register to vote), and a City resident for two years immediately preceding the time of applying.
The City Council is responsible for enacting all legislation, developing policies, and making general decisions for governing the City. City Council duties include adopting and amending City laws, approving the budget, establishing City policies and standards, approving contracts and agreements, and representing the City.
The City Council meets every Tuesday at 12 Noon for study sessions, at 5 PM for City Council meetings, and when needed at 3 PM for Committee of the Whole meetings. All of these meetings are held in the Tacoma Municipal Building, 747 Market Street, City Council Chambers, on the first floor. City Council standing committees meet on a set schedule from Tuesdays through Thursdays in the Tacoma Municipal Building, 747 Market Street, Room 248. These meetings are held in hybrid format that includes both in-person and remote options.
Compensation
Effective January 1, 2022, Council Members receive an annual salary of $46,789.00.
