Pipeline Trail - Phase 2

Project Description

Pipeline Trail-Phase 2 is a 2.4 mile contiguous non-motorized facility starting at Pipeline Road at East 48th Street and ending at the East 'D' Street Bridge I-5 Overpass. The project will construct a shared use path between East 48th and East 40th Streets. The trail will use new or existing sidewalks and bike lanes or sharrows on both sides of the street from East 40th Street to the East D Street Bridge. Sidewalks, approaches and curb ramps will be updated to ADA requirements. The project also includes:

  • LED lighting
  • New signage for safety and wayfinding
  • Trailhead markers
  • Installation of new landscaping
  • Permanent bicycle counter
  • New trailhead parking area at E. 40th and Pipeline Road
  • Bike compatible crossing beacons will be installed where East 48th intersects with Pipeline Road, and at the intersections of East 38th and I Street and Division Avenue.

The City will asphalt grinding and overlay on the following road segments

  • McKinley Way between East Wright Avenue and East G Street
  • East I Street between East 38th Street and East 40th Street
  • East I Street between East 35th Street and East 34th Street
  • East I Street between East 34th Street and East Wright Avenue

Project Updates-Dedication Ceremony June 8, 2019

The City of Tacoma is having a Dedication Ceremony for the Pipeline Trail Phase 2 project. Join us on June 8, 2019 at 10 AM near East 43rd Street and Pipeline Road East. There will be guest speakers, a bike ride, and a walking event after the ceremony.


It is suggested that attendees park at the trailhead at East 40th Street and make their way down the trail to the event location at East 43rd Street.
