17th & Jefferson – UWT Improvements – Ph. 2

Project Overview

In April 2015, the University of Washington Tacoma (UWT) and the City partnered on a project to realign the two segments of South 17th Street into a continuous through-street, improving the operation and safety of the intersection at Broadway and Jefferson Avenue. The project constructed a reinforced concrete wall, sidewalks, bulb-outs, ADA ramps, pavement improvements, streetlights, crosswalks and a raised mid-block pedestrian crossing. The project also improved a portion of Jefferson Avenue.  Improvements on Jefferson included constructing a reinforced concrete wall, new sidewalks, bulb-outs, ADA ramps, remove and replace HMA and concrete pavements, add new channelization and crosswalks, new storm main, new street lights, and a raised mid-block crossing extended from South 17th /Broadway/Jefferson and S. 17th/Commerce/Jefferson. UWT and the City are partnering on a continuation of the Jefferson Avenue project to extend the 2015 road improvements approximately 150 feet further south this year. The 2016 work consisted of: pavement removal, new pavement with curb and gutter, curb ramps, pavement markings, and new streetlights. Construction of a new 60-inch diameter reinforced concrete storm water sewer and water supply line will also be included in this project.
