Recommendation to City Council coming soon

The Planning Commission received about 900 comments on the preliminary Home In Tacoma Project proposals during the public comment period. The Commission is now considering revisions to the proposals, with the objective of finalizing recommendations to the City Council at their May 19, 2021 meeting.

In support of the upcoming City Council discussion, staff are preparing additional public notice and engagement opportunities. Stay tuned for meeting information and dates.

Project Overview 


On February 17, 2021 the Planning Commission authorized release of the Home In Tacoma Project recommendations for public review and comment. The Commission held a Public Hearing on April 7th, and accepted written and map comments through April 9, 2021.

Home In Tacoma Project proposals

Help shape the future of housing in Tacoma by commenting on the following proposed actions:

  • Allow more housing types throughout Tacoma's neighborhoods, such as duplexes, triplexes, cottage housing, and in some cases fourplexes and small multifamily housing
  • Allow mid-scale multifamily housing in areas close to shopping and transit
  • Update design standards so new housing complements the neighborhood
  • Strengthen policies and programs to make housing more affordable
  • Strengthen anti-racism and anti-displacement policies and programs    

The Home In Tacoma Project package includes Comprehensive Plan updates, near-term code updates, an environmental review of potential growth impacts, and a Housing Action Plan to guide implementation over time.

Planning Process 

Tacoma's Planning Commission and Housing Equity Taskforce are important partnerships for addressing affordable housing needs in Tacoma. Their work helps inform policy through engagement, research and review.

Housing Equity Taskforce

The Planning Commission and the Human Rights Commission have joined to form the Housing Equity Taskforce (HET) to provide focused input on equity and social justice considerations associated with housing. 


Public Meetings 

The HET meets monthly on the second Thursday of each month at 11:30 AM. Meetings are open to the public.

Ways to Participate

Through Spring 2021, Tacoma’s Planning Commission is asking the community to join in a discussion about housing needs, development trends, zoning, and neighborhood change. Using community ideas and feedback, the Commission will make recommendations to the City Council for Comprehensive Plan, Zoning, and Land Use Regulatory Code amendments.
