Green Events

Program Overview

The Green Event Program recognizes events in Tacoma that take extra care to have a more sustainable impact on the environment. Events that achieve Green Event certification incorporate actions like encouraging walking or biking, donating excess food, using recycled materials, and or promoting litter pickup and waste prevention.

Green Event Participation Criteria

Large Scale Events (more than 2,000 expected participants) that meet the below criteria are required to apply and receive Green Excellence certification:

  • Events using contributions from the City (monetary or in-kind)
  • Events on City property or using right-of-way permits
  • Events providing food, beverage, and/or giveaways (vendor-related)
Small-scale events (less than 2,000 participants) are encouraged to apply, but are not required to achieve certification.

Environmental Services Event Support  - Waste and Sanitation Services

Events that apply for Green Event certification may be eligible for Environmental Services (ES) Event Support. This might include free or discount in-kind services such as garbage, recycling, food waste bins, and/or portable toilets. All events may apply for Green Event Certification,  but only events that are free and open to the public may apply for waste and sanitation services through Environmental Services (ES Event Support).
