Current Events: Update on Supply of Sodium Hypochlorite

Updated 6/18/2021

Environmental Services was recently made aware of a potential delay to the supply of sodium hypochlorite, which is used in the Central Treatment Plant's wastewater treatment process. The delay is the result of a mechanical malfunction, which temporarily halted production at the supplier's chemical manufacturing plant in Longview.

Currently, Environmental Services has enough supply to last several weeks and are expected to receive an additional shipment once the supplier is able to resume production, which is estimated on June 25.

Environmental Services does have alternative means of treating wastewater, but the Central Treatment Plant is designed to use sodium hypochlorite as a primary source of treatment and other methods would take time to implement.

At this time, Environmental Services feels confident in current supply levels and anticipates that the supplier will be up and running soon. While the plant is functioning properly, precautionary measures have been taken by temporarily reducing the amount of hypochlorite used in the treatment process in an effort to further extend the supply. These reductions still maintain the standards required by Environmental Services' permits.

Wastewater Management

Wastewater Management, part of Environmental Services, operates two wastewater treatment plants, cleans billions of gallons of wastewater each year and maintains more than 700 miles of sewer pipe.

The water that leaves your homes through sinks, showers and toilets flows through sewer pipe to a wastewater treatment plant where it is treated before being released into Commencement Bay.

Wastewater Programs

The City of Tacoma recommends getting a Private Side Sewer Inspection if a building is more than 25 years old and/or does not have plastic PVC pipe running from the building to the sewer main.
