Our Mission
We conduct long-range, comprehensive planning activities pursuant to the State Growth Management Act and applicable federal, state, regional and local mandates. We work together with the community, City Council, and Planning Commission to develop and update the Comprehensive Plan, along with neighborhood and subarea plans, and associated regulations and implementation strategies that guide the future development of the built and natural environment of Tacoma.

Current Initiatives and Projects
Our goal is to guide community growth and development in a manner that protects environmental resources, enhances quality of life, promotes distinctive neighborhoods and a vibrant downtown, and involves citizens in the decisions that affect them.

One Tacoma Plan
One Tacoma is the City's Comprehensive Plan--it guides our community's development over the long term and describes how our community's vision for the future is to be achieved. In short, it is a blueprint for the future character of our city.

Regional Growth Centers
The City's two designated Regional Growth Centers are Downtown Tacoma, including Hilltop and the Stadium District, and the Tacoma Mall Neighborhood. The City has conducted extensive subarea plans for the Downtown and are currently undertaking a similar planning process for the Tacoma Mall Neighborhood.

Mixed-Use Centers
The City's designated Mixed-Use Centers are expected to accommodate a significant share of the city's overall growth in a way that anchors compact, complete and connected neighborhoods throughout Tacoma.

Plan and Code Amendments
Any citizen, business owner, or other interested party may apply for amendments to the City's Comprehensive Plan or Municipal Code. The application period for the 2020 Amendment will open January 1, 2019. Click the link below to learn more.

Planning Commission
The Planning Commission is a citizens group established by City Charter Section 3.8 to advise the City Council on a broad range of planning issues to ensure that all plans, goals, policies, and development regulations are promoting orderly and coordinated growth and development within the city.
