Community Service Work Crew

Community Service Work Crew Volunteer Program

The City's Community Service Work Crew (CSWC) allows participants with a traffic violation and low-risk misdemeanor violation, who are referred by Tacoma Municipal Court, to perform supervised work within Tacoma. The program is a cost recovery tool for otherwise unrecoverable fines.  Significant savings to the City and its volunteers are achieved by reducing jail costs and out of pocket expenses associated with traffic infractions.  Participants who are referred to the program provide visible repayment to the community while working to fulfill their obligations to the courts.

Projects typically include maintenance of rights-of-way such as removal of litter, overgrown vegetation, and assistance with neighborhood cleanups.  CSWC operates seven days a week from 7 AM to 3 PM.

How We Help

  • Relicensing: Volunteers are given credit off of their fines at the rate of $150 for every eight-hour day worked.
  • Over 140,000 pounds of litter removed from City streets each year.
  • Court custody and booking fees are avoided.
  • City property and neighborhood cleanups enhance the safety and beautification of our streets.
  • Assists individuals with community re-entry and engagement by fostering a sense of pride, respect, and responsible self-empowerment.
  • Volunteers save the City thousands of dollars each year that would otherwise be passed on to taxpayers.
