Council Member Ryan Mello Invites Community to Celebrate Pride July 9 – 20

--Tacoma Dome Will Raise Pride Flag for First Time on July 9--

TACOMA, Wash. – On July 9, at 10 a.m., the City of Tacoma will raise a Pride flag over the iconic Tacoma Dome for the first time. As is done with all special flag raisings, the Pride flag will be flown beneath the American flag. Later that evening, at the 5 p.m. City Council meeting, an official proclamation will be issued in honor of Pride Month.

“Symbols have always been profoundly important to our country and the Pride flag is the LGBTQA community’s symbol of inclusion and celebration,” said At-Large Council Member Ryan Mello. “In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion, the City of Tacoma is proud to publicly demonstrate its unwavering support and deep respect for the LGBTQA community.”

Council Member Mello will scale the Tacoma Dome and raise the flag on July 9 alongside Puyallup Tribal Council Member Annette Bryan, Washington State Representative Laurie Jinkins, and Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards. Manny Santiago, executive director of the Rainbow Center, will deliver remarks.

Community members are invited to view the Tacoma Dome flag raising on July 9 at 10 a.m. from the Tacoma Dome’s parking lot G. There will be a brief public reception afterward at the Rainbow Center.

Community members are also invited to a flag raising ceremony and LGBTQA Community Awards at the Pantages Theatre on July 12.
