Strickland to Participate in Panel Discussion on Economic Justice

TACOMA, Wash., and BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- As part of the U.S. Conference of Mayors Empowerment Week, Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland will participate in a panel discussion on economic justice in Birmingham, Ala. on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 7 a.m.Pacific Standard Time (9 a.m. Central Standard Time). Mayors Michael Nutter of Philadelphia, Mitch Landrieu of New Orleans and Paul Soglin of Madison, Wis. will join her on this panel.

The panel discussion is part of a larger community event to commemorate Birmingham’s important role in the civil rights movement of 1963 and the 50th anniversary of the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church, which killed four young girls. The event will air live on C-SPAN.

“I am honored to be part of this historic discussion at the 16th Street Baptist Church to acknowledge the progress we’ve made, and how we continue to move our communities forward by living up to the promise of equal opportunity and justice for all,” said Strickland.

Working with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the U.S. Department of State, the Conference of Mayors is establishing the U.S. Coalition of Cities Against Racism and Discrimination as part of the International Coalition of Cities Against Racism. UNESCO has asked the Conference of Mayors to organize the U.S. Coalition and serve as its secretariat. The Coalition's 10-Point Action Plan Against Racism and Discrimination will be released in Birmingham.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors is the official nonpartisan organization of cities with populations of 30,000 or more. There are 1,295 such cities in the country today, and each city is represented in the Conference by its chief elected official, the mayor.
