Statement From Council Member Chris Beale Regarding Accessory Dwelling Units Legislation
TACOMA, Wash. -- Accessory dwelling units (ADUs) – allowing family members to live closer to one another, seniors to age in place, home owners to collect additional income to offset mortgage costs, and cities to grow without adversely impacting single-family neighborhoods – has been a key topic for discussion in Tacoma.
“I will be offering a package of amendments aimed at incentivizing the creation of low, very low and extremely low income ADUs for those living at or below 30 percent of Area Median Income, and realizing the creation of these units with programmatic support and resources,” said District 5 Council Member Chris Beale, following last Tuesday’s testimony urging the City Council to adopt standards that address housing affordability in the City of Tacoma’s ADU legislation. “I am extremely passionate about legislation that supports our
Affordable Housing Action Strategy, and believe we need to take bold and decisive steps to address our community’s most pressing needs. I look forward to introducing these amendments and working with my Council colleagues to find solutions that are both equitable and sustainable.”
