A Statement From Mayor Victoria Woodards
on Governor Jay Inslee's Extension and Expansion of Eviction Moratorium

TACOMA, Wash. – “By extending the ban on evictions, Governor Jay Inslee has taken a crucial step to meet the needs of disrupted households and businesses in Tacoma and across all of Washington state. I specifically want to commend him for expanding the original order by extending protections to commercial tenants and prohibiting late fees for non-payment of rent. In our communications with Governor Inslee, the City Council and I have repeatedly emphasized the importance of these added measures. We will continue to advocate for increased protections for those residents, businesses and landlords who are under threat of foreclosure, as well as other ways we can work together to comprehensively address the needs of our community as the impacts of COVID-19 continue to deepen and touch more lives across Tacoma. In this time of great uncertainty, we will continue to look for ways to provide support for all members of our community. I also want to thank the many landlords who have been, and continue to, not only uphold the order but also find other ways to assist tenants throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.”
