Infrastructure, Planning, and Sustainability Committee to Discuss North 21st Street

The Infrastructure, Planning, and Sustainability (IPS) committee is holding a special meeting to discuss the future design of North 21st Street. This meeting is on Thursday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m. at the Tacoma Municipal Building (747 Market St., Room 248).

During this meeting the City of Tacoma’s Public Works Department is presenting road design options to the committee to seek their input on this important decision. A decision must be made regarding Tacoma Public Utilities pending pole replacement project as it will drive the City’s road design project. Public Works will be seeking funding for this portion of the road design project.

“It is important that the public be informed that the City will be deciding to reduce a four lane major arterial down to two lanes. Receiving a broad spectrum of public input is essential to understanding the impacts on the affected community,” said Council Member McCarthy.  “While this road project is exciting with respect to increased pedestrian safety and connectivity, as well as the beautification of this corridor, a significant reduction in the number of vehicular lanes in a major roadway needs to continue to be transparent and thoroughly vetted.”

Tacoma Power is planning to replace the 16 aging lattice towers that run up North 21st Street from North Adams to North Highland streets, along with those in and around Westgate Center, with 12 steel monopoles on every other block. The North 21st Street Pole Replacement Project is included in the TPU’s proposed 2017-2018 biennial budget. The City is working with TPU to ensure the selected pole locations accommodate future roadway improvements which will reduce the size of the median and completely reconstruct the roadway to provide sidewalks, planter strips, bike lanes, pedestrian crossing safety features, and turn lanes at intersections.
