Council Member Ryan Mello Urges Immigration and Customs Enforcement to Release DACA Detainee Daniel Ramirez From Federal Detention Center in Tacoma
Council Member Ryan Mello today urged ICE and the Department of Homeland Security to release Daniel Ramirez who has been detained in the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma since last week.
Mr. Ramirez was brought to the United States when he was 7 years old and was approved for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. He was recently picked up in a raid targeting others.
Council Member Mello, along with several colleagues, sent a letter to John Kelly, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, and Thomas Homan, Acting Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, advocating for Mr. Ramirez’s immediate release and asking for clarification as to the federal administration’s handling of DACA recipients.
“This detention has created fear and uncertainty among our immigrant community,” said Councilman Mello. “We want to support our immigrant and refugee community by requesting clarification of the status of DACA recipients to ensure everyone receives due process and protection under the law.”
