Chief Equity Officer Executive Profile

Lisa Woods is the second Chief Equity Officer leading the City of Tacoma’s Office of Equity and Human Rights which was established by the Tacoma City Council in 2014. As Chief Equity Officer, Ms. Woods provides vision, strategy and leadership to a staff who executes the City’s Equity and Empowerment Framework. This framework includes creating a workforce representative of the community, delivering equitable services and engaging in a meaningful way with all community members while recognizing those who have historically been most impacted by disparities and inequities that affect quality of life. The Human Rights Division is committed to increasing compliance with anti-discrimination laws and empowering our community with tools needed to exercise their civil rights.

Prior to her appointment as Chief Equity Officer in September 2021, Ms. Woods served in the City Manager’s Office as Assistant to the City Manager for Administrative and Performance Excellence. In this role, she worked to improve and enhance workplace culture, develop and retain aspiring leaders, support executive recruitment efforts and serve as executive sponsor on organization-wide initiatives. She joined the City of Tacoma in 2011 as Business / Finance Manager for Tacoma Venues and Events overseeing the financial staff and budget development process for the Tacoma Dome and Greater Tacoma Convention Center.  

Prior to joining the City of Tacoma, Ms. Woods held leadership positions in both the private and non-profit sectors. 

Ms. Woods has called the Pacific Northwest home for more than 30 years and has lived, worked and played in Tacoma and the surrounding areas. She is a mother and grandmother, and enjoys experiencing the beauty of the regions trails, waterways, parks, arts and culture. She is also a dedicated community volunteer with her church and in many organizations that have personal significance to her lived experience.
