Beacon Center Renovation Project

Beacon Activity Center Renovation Project

In late 2018, we conducted a feasibility study to assess our options to renovate the Beacon Activity Center in order to address deferred maintenance needs and make improvements to the space so that long term it can function as both a senior activity center and for youth and young adult day and overnight services. In late 2019 and early 2020, a series of community meetings were held to further refine options to renovate the facility.

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent City budget shortfall resulted in a delay of the construction project as well as a need to re-evaluate our programming at the facility to adapt to the needs of the populations served at Beacon.

We are now planning a phased approach to improvements at the center that will continue to support the City’s goal of increasing shelter capacity and reinforces the City’s commitment to providing safe gathering space and services for seniors.

Interior remodel to Begin October 2021

The first phase interior remodel will focus on priority needs that are necessary for us to achieve permanent permitting (rather than on an emergency basis) for youth and young adults to be sheltered at Beacon. We are currently serving about 40 youth at the center, who will remain at the facility during the construction. Priority needs include the addition of gender-neutral showers and restrooms for youth (single occupancy), laundry facilities, kitchen storage space, kitchenette, access improvements to the stage area (including wheelchair lift) for storage and case management, fire alarm system enhancements, security cameras, and interior cosmetic improvements (painting, floor refinishing). Construction will begin at the end of October 2021 and is anticipated to take six months.

Future phases are under review and may include deferred repair, replacement and modernization of key facility elements such as renovations of building exterior, upgrades in the heating ventilation system, off-site parking with ADA access, and potential enhancement of building entrances.

During construction, young adult overnight services will continue to operate on-site and construction needs will be coordinated with the young adult program providers.

We do not anticipate construction conflicts with senior services due to the temporary closure for COVID-19 safety and our current renovation timeline. Should senior services resume prior to completion of construction that would impact their use of space, the programming would be accommodated at Lighthouse Activity Center temporarily.
