Tree Coupon Program Details

Trees are woody plants whose height is greater than 15 feet at maturity.

For residents wishing to plant their trees in the planting strip, a no-fee permit is required and may submitted online, by fax or in person. Please consult our Planting in the Rights-of-Way webpage for more information. When you submit a no-fee permit application, we will:
  • Check known utilities and infrastructure to reduce future conflicts.
  • Review proposed species and identify alternative selections to increase urban forest health, minimize conflicts and insurrectional health if necessary.

Coupons are valid only at select tree retailers during the program season for $15 off each five-gallon and up tree of any kind. Coupons are valid from September 1, 2018 to April 1, 2019 for the 2018-19 season.

Limitations

  • Limited to one per household and are valid for the purchase of up to five trees per coupon per property.
  • Coupons are valid for the purchase of trees only.
  • Only Pierce County residents are eligible at this time due to the source of funding.
  • The coupons are not transferable or redeemable for cash.
  • The minimum redemption value is $15.
  • The maximum redemption value is $75.

About This Program

We know that trees are beautiful and we know that they reduce stormwater runoff, among many other benefits. For residents of Tacoma, this program is funded by stormwater utility rates to support multiple City of Tacoma goals and policies, including growing Tacoma’s Canopy Cover and reducing stormwater runoff and pollution.

Beginning in 2016, the program has expanded to Pierce County residents with assistance from Russell Family Forest Community of Interest funds and partnerships with Pierce County, Pierce Conservation District and Metro Parks Tacoma.

The program is now in its sixth season since beginning in late 2011 and is a replacement for Tacoma’s previous free tree program. We've partnered with local tree retailers to provide this discount for Pierce County residents.

Coupons may also be obtained at select local events and from participating nurseries during the program season.

Visit our Planting and Growing web page for information on how to properly plant and care for your tree.
