Tacoma Violent Crime Reduction Plan

Chief Moore presented an update on the Violent Crime Reduction Plan to City Council on Tuesday, November 7, 2023. The Tacoma Police Department is focused on reducing crime through its Violent Crime Reduction Plan, a product of work by Tacoma Police Department analysts and experienced criminologists from the University of Texas, San Antonio. The plan is an evidence-based plan based on sound science with proven success in other major cities.

About the Tacoma Police Department

In 1874, a small village on the shore of Commencement Bay incorporated as the City of Tacoma and appointed its first town marshal. Since then, we have grown to serve over 215,000 residents as an agency committed to community-oriented policing, relationship-building and reducing crime through effective partnerships.

Our department is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), which only two percent of agencies nationwide hold. In March 2023, we launched a new CALEA public comment portal. With this accreditation, the department's policies, procedures, management, operations, and support services are routinely assessed to ensure the highest standards of contemporary law enforcement are being met. The purpose of this portal is for CALEA to receive public comments regarding the Tacoma Police Department’s compliance with CALEA standards, community engagement, delivery of public safety services, and overall candidacy for accredited status. These comments can be in the form of commendations or concerns. CALEA will use these comments to provide information to the department to support continuous improvement, as well as foster the pursuit of professional excellence. Please submit your comments at https://cimrs2.calea.org/405.
