South Tacoma Way Neighborhood

South Tacoma Way Neighborhood PlanSTW Mural

The City’s Neighborhood Planning Program (NPP) provides enhanced planning and development support to help communities create strong, vibrant, and diverse neighborhoods.  City Council identified the South Tacoma Way Neighborhood as the location of the third Neighborhood Plan, launching in 2024. Plan goals and actions will be identified by the community through the planning process.

Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • Art installations and murals
  • Cleanup efforts
  • Community identity, placemaking, and history
  • Recognition and/or protection of cultural/historic resources
  • Sustainability and environmental health actions, such as tree plantings
  • Some elements of streetscape and public amenities
  • Some elements of safety/traffic calming
  • Determining the use of specific sites or properties

South Tacoma Way Neighborhood
For the purpose this plan, we are defining the “neighborhood” as the Mixed-UseSouth Tacoma Way Neighborhood Center/Business District—roughly S Tacoma Way, S Washington St, and S Puget Sound Ave between S 47th St and S 58th St—and the surrounding neighborhood. These boundaries may be adjusted during the planning process, but it is important to include public amenities (such as parks and schools) that service the core neighborhood. Click here for map PDF.

The Call: Get Involved, Stay Engaged!
Neighborhood stakeholders, led by a Steering Group working closely with City staff and a consultant team, will determine the goals of the plan and assist with creating a roadmap for implementation. Ways to get involved include:

  • Share your feedback on our online engagement platform
  • Join the Steering Group to help guide the Plan (deadline was March 11)
  • Participate in events and take surveys to share your feedback
  • Volunteer to assist with surveys, leading outreach, hosting an event, or helping build connections with community members who prefer Spanish, Russian, Khmer, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, Korean, Tagalog, ASL or other languages.

Stipends may be provided for specific contributions.

Estimated Timeline
We launched the program in January 2024 and anticipate completing the Plan and starting the early implementation process within 12 to 18 months.

Winter 2024: Neighborhood profile, existing conditions, and outreach
Spring 2024:  Collect project ideas and hear priorities from the community
Summer – Fall 2024: Develop draft plan and collect community feedback
Winter 2025: Council adoption; begin implementation

Project Funding
The Neighborhood Planning Program will provide funding for technical support by a consultant team and $50,000 for initial implementation, as determined by the community. Major projects will be accomplished through partnerships between the City and our partners.
