Surface Water

Environmental Services oversees more than 66,000 surface water accounts and maintains more than 500 miles of public stormwater pipe, 18,000-plus catch basins, four pump stations and numerous detention ponds/structures.

The water that leaves our streets, yards and driveways flows directly – untreated – to lakes, streams, rivers and Puget Sound. That’s why our surface water management programs concentrate on preventing pollution before it reaches our waters, and restoring sites already affected by industry and urbanization.

Surface Water Rates

Surface water rates pay for more than storm drains, they pay for a system that helps to preserve our environment, prevent flooding and manage rain water in an urban environment.

How You Can Prevent Pollution

The majority of Puget Sound pollution comes from things like leaky cars, brake pads, chemicals around the home and things as simple as car washes and dog poop.

Reporting Pollution If you see activities that threaten the health of Commencement Bay or surrounding waters, call Tacoma FIRST 311 or report it through their web page. Customers can dial 311 within Tacoma city limits or (253) 591-5000 from anywhere else.
