Information Technology

The City's Information Technology Department provides stable and reliable IT infrastructure for the internal operations of the City, provides business automation tools for management and distribution of information, and supports City departments and utility divisions in technology initiatives that serve citizens and customers.


About Us

The Information Technology Department provides technology services for internal City departments and divisions. The IT Department supports and maintains the enterprise resource planning (ERP) software that all City business units use, as well as the technology infrastructure that allows the City to perform essential services.

Highlighted Services

TacomaData is a cloud software that hosts City data such as crime statistics, public works infrastructure projects and major employers. TacomaData is available at https://data.cityoftacoma.org/. The Information Technology Department runs the pilot program as part an effort to improve access to information and government transparency through an open data platform. The program currently has over 60 data sets from 11 contributing City departments. Users can create different "views" such as heat maps, graphs and charts to view the data in the most visually relevant way to display the information to meet their needs.

Security Tips and a monthly Cyber Security Newsletter are provided by the Security and Enterprise Architecture Office (SEAO). Please visit our Cyber Security page to read tips and current and past articles. The SEAO also hosts an internship program in conjunction with the University of Washington-Tacoma for computer science students to learn more about cyber security.

Free wireless access is available in all parts of the Tacoma Municipal Building Complex for citizens and visitors.  

GovME (Government Made Easy) provides geographic information system (GIS) mapping services, records, drawings, and permitting to businesses and residents.  



The City of Tacoma's Information Technology Department was awarded seventh place (125,000-249,999 population) of the Center for Digital Government and National League of Cities 2013 Digital Cities Survey Award.

The Center for Digital Government's Digital Cities Survey is conducted annually in the summer from July to August. All United States cities, towns, villages and consolidated city/county governments with populations of 30,000 or greater are invited to participate in this survey.

The Information Technology Department is officially certified by SAP as a Customer Center of Expertise.

The Department is proud of being the first city in Washington to earn an award from the

State Electronics Challenge (SEC), winning Bronze three years in a row (2011, 2012 and 2013) by purchasing only computer equipment qualified by the Electronic Procurement Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT®), extending the life of its computer equipment, by reusing computer equipment, through power management, and responsible recycling of equipment at its end of life.
