2014 Tacoma Charter Review - A Look at How Your City Works

Citizens are welcome to attend any Charter Review meeting to give public comment. The Charter Review Committee meets Monday and Wednesday at 7 PM in Room 16 of the Tacoma Municipal Building North at 733 Market Street.  Come be a part of history and let your voice be heard.

Establishment

Pursuant to Section 2.25 of the City Charter, the City Council shall commence a comprehensive review of the City Charter no less frequently than once every ten years by appointing citizens to a Charter Review Committee. On November 12, 2013, the City Council approved Resolution No. 38773 creating a Charter Review Committee.

Membership

There are 15 positions on the Charter Review Committee and all positions will be appointed in January 2014. 

Members will be appointed in the following manner:

  • The Mayor and each City Council member shall recommend one person for appointment.
  • The Government Performance and Finance Committee shall recommend the appointment of six people, to reflect a cross section of the citizens of Tacoma.
  • The Mayor shall select the chairperson of the Committee.

Members will serve until the final reports and recommendations are made on or before May 6, 2014. At that time the Charter Review Committee will be dissolved.
 

Duties and Responsibilities

The Charter Review Committee shall review the existing Charter of the City of Tacoma and make such recommendations for change as the committee may deem necessary and proper in order to amend the provisions of the existing City Charter with reference to improving the mode and manner of operation and efficiency in conducting the affairs of the City.

The Committee shall submit its recommendations and findings to the City Council on or before May 6, 2014, so that adequate and appropriate provisions can be made for the holding of a special municipal election in November 2014, in the event that the City Council determines that recommendations for revisions or changes should be submitted for a vote of the people.
