Festival of Sail 2017 Traffic Control Impacts

Festival of Sail is Taking Place June 15-18, 2017

Over the four day event schedule, it’s estimated that 30,000 to 50,000 visitors each day are expected to be drawn to the festival site, located on the Thea Foss Waterway.

Significant citywide impacts are expected on pedestrian, vehicular, and marine access along the Thea Foss Waterway, Dock Street and Downtown Tacoma.

Traffic Impacts

The northbound lane on Dock Street between East 15th Street and Schuster Parkway will be closed from 4 PM on Wednesday, June 14, through 10 PM on Sunday, June 18, in order to help ensure public safety before, during and after the event.


South 15th Street from Pacific Avenue to South Hood Street will also be closed during the event.


Vehicles accessing Dock Street will only be allowed to travel northbound from East 15th Street through Schuster Parkway and gaining access will only be allowed from East D Street.


No southbound vehicular traffic onto Dock Street will be permitted at the intersection of South 4th Street and Schuster Parkway. 


Dock Street south of East 15th Street will remain open to vehicles in both directions. During the event, the westbound lane of the East 15th Street ramp will be open to vehicles and the eastbound lane will be open to pedestrians only.


While emergency vehicles will always have access, community members may experience delays getting to private driveways, parking lots, garages, sidewalks and walkways.


Road closure signs and marked detours will be in place throughout the surrounding area.

Parking and Alternate Transportation

Ticket holders are being encouraged to use alternate transportation as parking will be very limited in the event area.

Traffic Advice

Tips to Follow

  • Allow yourself extra time to get to the event and be prepare for delays.
  • Use caution when driving in heavy traffic areas.
  • Plan to arrive at the event as early as possible or stay as late as possible to avoid peak crowd times.

Note: The Tacoma Dome will have an active weekend of graduations during the Festival of Sail. Exits from I-5 in the vicinity of the Tacoma Dome leading into Downtown Tacoma and the area around the Dome will have increased traffic during these events.

Murray Morgan Bridge Schedule

For travelers who plan to use the Murray Morgan Bridge to get in and out of the downtown area, there will be times the bridge will be lifted to accommodate ships using the Thea Foss Waterway.
