Walking the Talk to Deliver Pedestrian Improvements

The City of Tacoma has announced the proposed list of 57 road locations slated for pedestrian improvements beginning this fall and continuing through summer 2015. Selections were made with the help of the community after asking them to “Talk the Walk” with City staff.

Councilmember Thoms, who advocated for the $2.5 million general fund budget reallocation to pay for the work, shared that he is happy the improvements are going where they’ll be most valued. “We heard from the community that attention to this area has been wanted for a long time. We sought citizen input and are addressing the problem together. The improvements and process show real progress that Tacomans should be proud of.”

The City prioritized the selected locations based on feedback from residents and those who spend time in Tacoma. Chosen locations are those that wouldn’t have otherwise been improved by other near-term construction projects. The final number of projects the City will be able to complete may vary based on ultimate design and construction costs.

The selection criteria preferences shared by residents will live on as they're also being used to inform the City’s first Transportation Master Plan, currently under way.
