Listening Session Scheduled to Discuss Operation of the Center at Norpoint as a Warming Center

The City of Tacoma and Metro Parks Tacoma are working together to activate community centers in Tacoma to provide services to people experiencing homelessness.

A virtual community listening session is scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, January 14 from 6-7:30 p.m. on ZOOM to respond to community questions about the use of the Center at Norpoint as a warming center during the inclement winter weather season.

Sleeping mats, meals, showers and connections to supportive services will be provided to all participants. Participants will be required to wear masks, maintain physical distancing and follow all other required safety measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Referrals to the center will be made by the Homeless Outreach Team and community service providers, who can arrange transportation and confirm space availability with the center operator, so that guests seeking shelter are able to be accommodated upon arrival.

This would be the second warming center activated by the City and Metro Parks. In October, a warming center was established at the Eastside Community Center. That Warming Center operates at full capacity of 55 people 24-hours a day and is scheduled to be in operation through March 31.

Metro Parks Tacoma also is using the STAR Center and the People’s Center to support students who are experiencing homelessness with distance learning.
