Tacoma Police Chief

Police Chief

Patti Jackson

Throughout my career — whether leading Corrections, Patrol Operations, or broader agency efforts across the Tacoma Police Department — I have focused on accountability, integrity, and strengthening the people who serve with selfless dedication every day. After more than 35 years in law enforcement, stepping up to serve as the Chief of the Tacoma Police Department isn’t about chasing a title — it’s about answering the call when leadership is needed most.

As a law enforcement professional, I am committed to promoting the wellness, resilience, and professionalism of our personnel. Why? Because when we invest in our people, we become even stronger in the service we provide to our community. My colleagues and I care about our neighbors across the city of Tacoma and are innovating to better serve them with integrity and respect.

It’s an honor to stand with the dedicated men and women of the Tacoma Police Department as we move forward together — leading with purpose, building trust, and always keeping our focus where it belongs: on those we serve.

About the Tacoma Police Department

Our department is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), which only two percent of agencies nationwide hold. With this accreditation, the department’s policies, procedures, management, operations, and support services are routinely assessed to ensure the highest standards of contemporary law enforcement are being met. The purpose of this portal is for CALEA to receive public comments regarding the Tacoma Police Department’s compliance with CALEA standards, community engagement, delivery of public safety services, and overall candidacy for accredited status. These comments can be in the form of commendations or concerns. CALEA will use these comments to provide information to the department to support continuous improvement, as well as foster the pursuit of professional excellence.

This is how teamwork, technology, and determination came together to bring Mr. Gary safely home.
On Saturday, we were alerted that Gary, who suffers from Alzheimer’s, had walked away from his family during a trip to the zoo. Once on scene, we immediately called out all available resources to ...assist with the search.
After hours of coordinated searching using live GPS mapping, a German Shepherd search K9 team picked up the sound of Gary’s voice off-trail along a steep cliffside. He had slid down an embankment and was clinging to a tree root halfway down.
Officers and Search and Rescue volunteers worked side by side to safely bring Gary back up from the cliff’s edge. He was located approximately 3.5 miles from his last known location.
This incredible recovery was only possible thanks to the combined efforts of officers, K9 teams, drone operators, Pt. Defiance Employees, 4x4 units, and our dedicated SAR civilian volunteers who never gave up. 💙
Thank you to everyone who helped bring Gary home safe!
