Port of Tacoma Road Update - Jan. 20

Port of Tacoma Road Update - Jan. 20
This week's construction update for the Port of Tacoma Road reconstruction project:

Final intersection under construction this month
Construction continues this week on the intersection of East 11th Street and Port of Tacoma Road. The work is weather-dependent and expected to last several weeks.

Grinding and paving will take place in five stages, and traffic patterns—particularly for passenger traffic—will change at each stage. The second stage of construction has closed the southeast corner and is expected to be completed this week.

Truck staging for Husky Terminal and Olympic Container Terminal remain as follows:

Husky trucks: Stage on Port of Tacoma Road until construction is complete.
OCT trucks: Continue to use the Overflow and East 11th Street staging areas; use the West Gate to exit.

Stage 3 is expected to begin next week. This stage will close the northeast corner of the intersection. Along with the truck staging noted above, other traffic pattern impacts for stage 3 include:

Passenger vehicles: POVs will have access to the Main Gate from Port of Tacoma Road. POV’s are encouraged to exit out of the West Gate.
Westwood trucks: Westwood breakbulk trucks will not stage on Port of Tacoma Road. Westwood trucks will use the Overflow and East 11th Street staging areas. Follow the directions for OCT trucks.
Map: See a map of Stage 3 traffic patterns.

If the weather cooperates, expect work at the intersection this weekend, Jan. 23 and 24.

Expect delays and be prepared for disruptions at the intersection. Please be patient while the contractor completes the final phase of the reconstruction project.

All lanes open from Marshall Avenue to East 11th Street
All five lanes of Port of Tacoma Road are open from Marshall Avenue to just before East 11th Street, with temporary striping marking the lane boundaries.

Expect occasional lane closures over the next several weeks as the contractor completes final work on the roadway.

Port of Tacoma Road to close Jan. 30 and 31
Port of Tacoma Road will be closed Jan. 30 and 31 from Marshall Avenue to Lincoln Avenue to perform work on the railroad crossings. Access to local businesses will be provided during the closure.

Stay safe through construction zone
Safety is our top priority. The contractor, City, Tacoma Rail and Port continue to work with emergency responders to make sure they have access through the construction zone.

Remember, the speed limit through the construction zone is 30 mph. Obey all traffic laws, watch for traffic revisions and use extra caution when driving through the port industrial area.
