Port of Tacoma Road Update - Jan. 13

Port of Tacoma Road Update - Jan. 13

This week's construction update for the Port of Tacoma Road reconstruction project:

Final intersection under construction this month
Construction began this week on the intersection of East 11th Street and Port of Tacoma Road. The work is weather-dependent and expected to last several weeks.

Grinding and paving will take place in five stages, and traffic patterns—particularly for passenger traffic—will change at each stage. The first stage of construction closed the southwest corner of the intersection this week. See a map and traffic pattern descriptions.

Truck staging for Husky Terminal has changed, while Olympic Container Terminal staging remains the same:

Husky trucks: Stage on Port of Tacoma Road until construction is complete.
OCT trucks: Continue to use the Overflow and East 11th Street staging areas.
West gate exit: OCT trucks are encouraged to use the West Gate to exit the terminal.

Stage 2 is expected to begin next week. This stage will close the southeast corner of the intersection. Along with the truck staging noted above, other traffic pattern impacts for stage 2 include:

Passenger vehicles: POVs will not have access to the Main Gate from Port of Tacoma Road; POVs must use East 11th Street to access the Main Gate. POVs are encouraged to use the West Gate to exit.
Westwood trucks: Westwood breakbulk trucks will not stage on Port of Tacoma Road. Westwood trucks will use the Overflow and East 11th Street staging areas. Follow the directions for OCT trucks.
Map: See a map of Stage 2 traffic patterns.

If the weather cooperates, expect work at the intersection this weekend, Jan. 16 and 17.

Expect delays and be prepared for disruptions at the intersection. Please be patient while the contractor completes the final phase of the reconstruction project.

All lanes open from Marshall Avenue to East 11th Street
All five lanes of Port of Tacoma Road are open from Marshall Avenue to just before East 11th Street, with temporary striping marking the lane boundaries.

Expect occasional lane closures over the next several weeks as the contractor completes final work on the roadway.

Stay safe through construction zone
Safety is our top priority. The contractor, City, Tacoma Rail and Port continue to work with emergency responders to make sure they have access through the construction zone.

Remember, the speed limit through the construction zone is 30 mph. Obey all traffic laws, watch for traffic revisions and use extra caution when driving through the port industrial area.
