There are an estimated 250 families with children experiencing homelessness daily in Tacoma. The number has grown in recent years, and although the direct cause is unknown service providers do believe there has been a correlation between the increase in families experiencing homelessness and the increase in foreclosures. 


The greatest causes of homelessness for persons in families are (2008 U.S. Conference of Mayors study):

  • Lack of affordable housing
  • Poverty
  • Unemployment

Tacoma has four shelters that provide families who are experiencing homelessness shelter services:
