For-Hire Licensing

Per the Tacoma Municipal Code Chapter 6B.220 For-Hire Regulations, it is unlawful for any person, firm or corporation to hold out, advertise, offer information or a method to obtain a third party transportation service, solicit, operate, drive or use any vehicle as a for-hire in the City of Tacoma without having first obtained required license.


Licensing Jurisdictions

The City of Tacoma licenses all drivers, vehicles and transportation services companies that operate in the City of Tacoma and/or Unincorporated Pierce County.


Do you want to be a For-Hire Driver?

The basic licensing standards are listed below. Please refer to the Tacoma Municipal Code Chapter 6B.220 For-Hire Regulations for complete details.

  • Apply for the For-Hire Driver license.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Have a valid Washington State Driver License.
  • Complete a City authorized driver training program and successfully pass a written exam.
  • Proof of completion of a City approved defensive driving program.
  • Consent to be fingerprinted for a state and national Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation criminal background check or submit proof that a background check has been conducted by a Director-approved third party vendor.
  • Provide certification of fitness to drive.

Application Process

The application process to operate as for-hire driver, TNC driver or as a transportation services company requires several forms to be completed. Select an application packet type:


        I want to driver for Uber

        I only want to drive for a For-Hire Transportation Service Company
        I want to operate as an Affiliated For-Hire Driver (Owner/Operator) 
        I want to drive a personal vehicle for a TNC
        I want to open a new For-Hire Transportation Services Company


For-Hire Driver Training 

The City now offers For-hire driver training online, this program has been created to help drivers better prepare for the for-hire driver's written exam.  Upon completion of the course drivers will automatically receive an email confirmation which will also be sent to City of Tacoma Tax & License Division.  Drivers must first apply for the license in order to obtain link to the training site.


Defensive Driving Training

The City requires that all for-hire drivers complete a City authorized defensive driving training course.  A City authorized online course is available through the National Safety Council for a fee. This course allows drivers to pace their learning and schedule. 


Already taken a defensive driving course?   Driver's that have already completed a defensive driving training course can submit proof upon application.  The program will be reviewed for approval.


For-Hire Written Exam

The City offered for-hire exam is administered through Tacoma Community College.  Driver must first apply for the for-hire driver license and complete the driver training course to sit for the exam.  The fee for the exam is $30 and is paid directly to Tacoma Community College. More information about the exam is provided to applicants upon application.
