A Statement From Mayor Victoria Woodards
on Tragedy at South 19th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way

TACOMA, Wash. -- "Over the last couple of weeks, we have seen a spike in shootings and fatalities and, this morning, a 14-year-old girl was tragically shot and killed. In the face of these ongoing tragedies, I am beyond devastated. I am furious.

While words seem inadequate during times like these, I want the families and every person in our community impacted to know that I stand beside you in your grief. While the Council and I share the heartbreak and frustration of the community, we will not be slowed by it. We are continuing to work to advance initiatives to reduce violent crime, and the Council and I will continue to support, and work with, Police Chief Avery Moore and the Tacoma Police Department to make that happen.

Those interested in hearing a detailed presentation on the City’s Violent Crime Reduction Plan can tune in to the City Council Study Session at noon on July 12 to hear more.

In light of today’s events and in support of Tacoma Ceasefire, I can share that they will be holding a vigil for the family tomorrow evening at 6 PM at the corner of South 19th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way. I invite our community to join the family this evening to grieve in solidarity. "
