Deputy City Manager Executive Recruitment

The City of Tacoma is conducting a nationwide search through The Prothman Company, an executive search firm, for its next Deputy City Manager.  Interested individuals are encouraged to apply by March 13, 2022 to make the first review of applications for this executive level position, which will remain open until it is filled.  

Under the direction of the City Manager, the Deputy City Manager assists in the implementation of the City Council's priorities, and the day-to-day administration and operation of all units of the City’s general government functions. The Deputy City Manager also serves as the City Manager in their absence. 

The Deputy City Manager's major responsibilities include consulting with and advising the City Manager on management of administrative matters as well as community and operational needs, and leading the execution of complex policies and programs set by the City Council to fulfill the goals and objectives of the City. Providing direct oversight and leadership of a diverse portfolio of City departments and functions, the Deputy City Manager also serves as a key representative of the City Manager’s Office in the community, and guides budget development, adjustments and monitoring.

The ideal candidate for Deputy City Manager will have had previous local government experience at the City Manager, Deputy City Manager, or Assistant City Manager levels (or equivalent), with increasingly responsible experience in the management and administration of municipal government operations including experience supervising executive-level staff. The ideal candidate will also have had leadership experience covering a broad range of municipal functions including public safety, community and economic development, budget and finance, public works and environmental services, legal and human resources, and information technology.

In June 2020, the City Council passed Resolution 40622, acknowledging the disparate impacts of systematic racism, and affirming the City’s commitment to anti‐racist systems transformation. The Deputy City Manager will be stepping into a leadership role in the City’s anti-racist transformation efforts.
