Project Update
Construction Update:
This project is currently in the close-out phase. The contractor is currently working on the construction deficiency list which is anticipated to be completed by the end of May 2023. Construction started January 28, 2022.
Project Outreach
City of Tacoma's Public Works Department held a virtual public meeting on September 8, 2021, to provide additional information about the project.
Local stakeholders involved in the project design include UW Tacoma, Downtown on the Go, the Hillside Development Council, and more. Informational flyers will be sent to all residents and businesses in the area notifying them of the pending construction. Seven days before the start of construction, electronic message boards will be placed along the corridor to notify drivers of the pending work.
Project Description
This project will construct traffic calming measures along Fawcett Ave., from S. 19th St. to 6th Ave., consisting of new curb ramps, curb extensions, pedestrian refuge islands, mid-block crossings, and other upgraded crossings. The majority of the roadway surface will be repaved. ADA accessibility will be improved with upgraded crosswalk push buttons and bicycle detection will be implemented at major intersections. This project also includes a striped bicycle lane along S. 15th St., from Yakima Ave. to Fawcett Ave. Modifications to parking will result from curb extensions, mid-block crossings, and bicycle facilities.
A High-intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) beacon will be installed at the S. 19th St./ Fawcett Ave. intersection. For more information about HAWK beacons and how they operate, please visit this web page. Utility work will be completed in conjunction with the roadway construction, including improvements from Tacoma Power, Tacoma Water, Stormwater, and Sanitary.

Traffic and Parking Changes During Construction
One lane of travel will remain open during construction. Pedestrian/bicycle routes will be provided through the construction zones at all times. Local access to all businesses and residences will be maintained throughout construction. Electronic message boards will be placed along the corridor to notify drivers of all traffic changes. Temporary no-parking restrictions for construction activity will be posted no later than 48 hours prior to effect. Parking availability will be impacted along the entire corridor throughout the construction phase; utility construction (beginning of project) and paving (end of project) will have most impact.
