Mayor Victoria Woodards Invites Community Members to Share Stories of Compassion in Action

TACOMA, Wash. – As part of the Compassionate Tacoma initiative, Mayor Victoria Woodards is inviting individuals and organizations across Tacoma to submit stories of compassion in action – instances of support among neighbors or community service that have brought hope during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Submitted stories may be selected to receive a newly-established Compassionate Tacoma Recognition and be featured during the City Council meeting on the second Tuesday of each month. Stories may also be highlighted on the City’s official communications platforms to inspire and encourage others. Community members can submit stories online or by emailing compassion@cityoftacoma.org.

“I have seen and felt Tacoma’s compassion and, during the difficulties of COVID-19, our compassion did not fade,” said Mayor Woodards. “Instead, across our community, people stepped up to help neighbors, local businesses, medical professionals, and all of our essential workers. Now, I’m asking you to share your stories of compassion. These stories have the power to lift us up as a community, and fill our hearts with hope and possibility while motivating us to continue listening and serving others with love.”

Because service to others strengthens and connects the community as a whole, the first 100 to submit a story of compassion in action will receive a Compassionate Tacoma branded item.

Compassionate Tacoma was launched last year by Mayor Woodards during her 2020 State of the City address, in the earliest days of the COVID-19 pandemic in Tacoma and across the nation. She highlighted collaboration as essential to the development of transformative and innovative ways to address key issues facing the community, noting that many solutions already come from the daily acts of compassion exhibited by members of the Tacoma community toward one another.

More information about Compassionate Tacoma is available at cityoftacoma.org/compassionate. Questions, or requests for information in alternate formats, may be directed to Melanie Harding in the Office of Mayor Victoria Woodards at melanie.harding@cityoftacoma.org or (253) 591-5156.
