Mayor Victoria Woodards’ Statement on Governor Jay Inslee’s Decision to
Limit Larger Events Through End of March

-- City of Tacoma Continues to Support Coordinated Community Response to COVID-19 --

TACOMA, Wash. – The State has been faced with difficult decisions balancing public health and safety with important educational and economic activities across Washington. Because there is much we are continuing to learn, I appreciate that Governor Jay Inslee has taken an incremental approach in limiting larger events only through the end of March at this time

Community safety continues to be a priority for the City of Tacoma. We have been coordinating with Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department and following their guidance. We have also been listening to the concerns of our community in making decisions about whether we should postpone events or meetings.

Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department issued guidance on Monday that people age 60 and older, people with underlying health conditions and pregnant women should take extra measures to distance themselves from other people and stay at home.

I encourage those who are healthy and are not from vulnerable populations to find ways to support our community during this time, by engaging in volunteering at food banks and non-profits and investing their dollars in our local business community.

This time of disruption calls on all of us to come together and help those we can and, by doing so, minimize impacts to our health, the health of our neighbors, and daily life for all members of our community.

As the situation evolves, please check the City of Tacoma’s “What’s Going On” section of the website for the most up-to-date information about the City’s response. More information about COVID-19, for community members as well as businesses, is available at TPCHD.org/coronavirus.
