City of Tacoma Continues to Make Public Safety a Top Priority as COVID-19 Situation Evolves

The City of Tacoma is continuing to follow the guidance of Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department and operate under normal conditions, as there are no confirmed cases of the virus in Pierce County.

“We recognize the community’s concerns about the new coronavirus, and we want to respond at an appropriate level,” said Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards. “Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department is still advising that we take simple and effective precautions like more frequent hand-washing, covering coughs and sneezes, calling ahead to your doctor’s office if you are experiencing flu-like symptoms and, most importantly, staying home when you are sick.”

While Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department is not recommending the cancellation of events, the City is currently evaluating whether City-sponsored events planned for March should be cancelled or postponed. The City anticipates making those decisions next week.

“We have been, and will continue to, coordinate with Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department and the Washington State Emergency Management Division to evaluate and prepare for COVID-19 impacts,” Woodards said. “As the situation changes, we are prepared to mobilize resources and escalate our response if needed.”

As the situation changes, please check the City’s “What’s Going On” section of the website for the most up-to-date information about the City’s response. For more information about COVID-19, go to TPCHD.org/coronavirus.
