Design Guidelines for Old City Hall Historic District Adopted

The Landmarks Preservation Commission formally adopted the first set of design guidelines for the Old City Hall Historic District on July 10, 2019.

The guidelines, which have been under development since 2018, provide guidance to the Commission, property owners and designers for the alteration of existing historic buildings as well as for infill design, to ensure the preservation of the district's character for generations to come.

“These design guidelines will simplify the review process for property owners and managers,” said Reuben McKnight, City of Tacoma Historic Preservation Officer.

Created in 1978, the Old City Hall Historic District is composed of approximately 40 buildings, including some of Tacoma's most iconic and important buildings, such as Old City Hall (1893), the recently renovated Elks Temple (1915), and the Northern Pacific Headquarters Building (1888).
