Final Reading of Ordinance No. 28556 to Take Place at
Tonight’s City Council Meeting for Adoption of 2019-2020 Biennial Budget

-- Budget Enhances Public Safety, Protects and Expands Access to Affordable Housing,
and Supports Youth and Adults Experiencing Homelessness --

Following an extensive community outreach and engagement process, a final reading of Ordinance No. 28556 will take place at tonight’s Tacoma City Council meeting for the adoption of the 2019-2020 Biennial Budget.

During her initial presentation of the proposed budget on October 2, 2018, City Manager Elizabeth Pauli outlined a recommended plan to enhance public safety, protect and expand access to affordable housing, and support youth and adults experiencing homelessness, while addressing long-deferred maintenance needs and expanding key services for Tacoma and its residents over the next two years.

The City’s 2019-2020 Proposed Biennial Budget is $3.5 billion, of which $514.6 million is allocated to the General Fund. The City is increasing its reserves to 16.7 percent of annual expenditures, or two months of operating expenses, and estimates that it will end the 2017-2018 biennium with surplus savings to help fund one-time expenses in the 2019-2020 biennium.

Subsequent to the initial proposal of the budget, adjustments were made incorporating Council feedback in the areas of economic development, human and community services, street infrastructure and library services.

“Thanks to careful, ongoing reviews of expenses along with targeted reductions, the City will maintain or expand existing core service levels in the 2019-2020 Proposed Biennial Budget,” said City Manager Elizabeth Pauli. “The 2019-2020 Proposed Biennial Budget reflects the City’s ongoing commitment to meeting its goals in a fiscally responsible way.”

The City’s 2019-2020 Biennial Budget, once adopted, will be posted at cityoftacoma.org/budget.
