Statement From Deputy Mayor Anders Ibsen Regarding Passage of New Law to Fight Discrimination

"In the City of Tacoma's 2018 state legislative agenda, it is noted that restrictive property covenants often contain language that is illegal under Washington’s anti-discrimination law. HB 2514 will allow any property owner to file a non-judicial procedure marking discriminatory language on any title document as void. Discriminatory covenants were put in place at one point to perpetuate racial and ethnic segregation, and community members have shared with us how important it is to remove this offensive language from the books. I am pleased that HB 2514 will now go into effect on Jan. 1, 2019."
