Engaging New Members Continues to be a High Priority
for Neighborhood Councils as They Celebrate 25 Years of Service

Hoping to attract those who are inclined to participate more actively in their local communities, Tacoma’s Neighborhood Councils are hosting a 25th anniversary celebration and information event on Thursday, September 28, from 5:30 to 8 PM, at the STAR Center (3873 South 66th Street in Tacoma).

“Our Neighborhood Councils recognize the power that individuals have to bring about positive, lasting change when working together toward shared goals,” said event co-chair Pennie Smith. “We encourage those who have ideas for creativity and innovation at the neighborhood level to attend this celebration and learn more about what Neighborhood Councils do.”

Gearing up for the possibility of 100 - 150 guests, event co-chairs Marion Weed and Pennie Smith plan to spotlight the legacy of service that the Neighborhood Councils have cultivated in Tacoma since its City Council passed legislation in September 1992 to establish the program.

Any member of an existing neighborhood group, resident, business owner, employee or property owner within a Neighborhood Council area can join a Neighborhood Council. Tacoma’s eight Neighborhood Council boundaries – in North East Tacoma, New Tacoma, the North End, the West End, Central Tacoma, South Tacoma, the Eastside and the South End – correspond to the City’s traditional planning areas.

Each Neighborhood Council serves as an independent, non-profit citizen organization to promote citizen-based efforts for neighborhood improvement.
