Next Phase of Schuster Slope Landscape Management Plan Begins in December

The City of Tacoma’s Environmental Services Department is teaming up with Puget SoundCorps to remove English ivy, Himalayan blackberry and other species of invasive vines from two, approximate three acre sections of Schuster Slope. Work on this project is starting in December 2016 and is expected to run through February 2017. This is the second round of restoration work the City is implementing as part of the Schuster Slope Landscape Management Plan.

After the initial removal of invasive plants, materials will be installed over the slope to reduce erosion on the steep portions of the site. Native trees, shrubs and groundcovers will then be planted through installed erosion control blankets. The goal of this project is to turn the Schuster Slope into a mixed evergreen forest slope with multiple layers of native vegetation and improve slope stability.

This work is being done in collaboration with the Urban Forestry Restoration Project, administered by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources and the Urban and Community Forestry Program. The purpose of the program is to enhance the capacity of urban forests, to manage stormwater and improve air and water quality by cultivating the health and functionality of trees and forested sites in urban settings.
