Monday Mixer on Oct. 17 Focuses on Maker City

Join the City of Tacoma for the next Monday Mixer networking event held at 1120 Creative House (1120 Pacific Ave., 2nd Floor) on Monday, Oct. 17, from 5 – 7 p.m.

On the heels of this year’s Etsy Maker City Summit, this networking event will focus on Tacoma’s Maker community. Are you an artist, a manufacturer, an inventor, a tinkerer, a designer or someone else creative who makes things?  Then you are a maker and are encouraged to attend this mixer designed to be an informal way to meet other makers, content experts, government representatives and interested parties to share information and build community.

“Tacoma is built on a rich history of innovation and manufacturing,” said Mayor Marilyn Strickland.  “Now we are poised to advance our position as a Maker City again by strengthening opportunities for our local talent to thrive. Much like Brooklyn, where the Etsy Maker City Summit was held earlier this year, we have a thriving artisan community that takes great pride in their work.”

At this event, participants can meet Stephen Jones from Tacoma Manufacturing Company and Tim and April Norris from Tim+April who were the forces behind Tacoma’s invitation to participate in the Etsy Maker City Summit.  As a result of this summit, these makers are launching a “Made in Tacoma” initiative. Makers are invited to visit madeintacoma.us and fill out a short survey.  “We want to know who all the makers are in our community so we can strengthen our network and together, identify ways to build and grow as a creative economy,” said April Norris.

In addition, there will be representatives from mixer co-host Spaceworks Tacoma, Fablab, IDEA (the Industrial Design Engineering Art high school), co-working and maker spaces, the Office of Arts & Cultural Vitality plus hundreds of fellow makers.

Monday Mixers are free to attend and open to all. Visit tacomameansbusiness.com for more information.
