Gun Safe T Education Campaign
The 2011 Tacoma Gang Assessment found a majority (59%) of gang involved youth and/or youth at risk of gang involvement stated that it would be either "very easy" or "somewhat easy" to access a handgun.
In June 2014, the City launched the Gun Safe T Education Campaign to build awareness and create opportunities to bring safety education on the use, storage and surrender of firearms to Tacoma youth and the community.
According to the National Center for Injury Prevention & Control, 18 children and young adults (24 years of age and under) are killed by firearm injuries each day in the U.S.
Knowing basic safe gun handling procedures helps prevent gun accidents. There are classes you and your children can take to learn how to:
- Check and turn on the safety lock.
- Have and maintain muzzle control.
- Know if the gun is loaded.
According to the U.S. General Accounting Office, 8% of shooting deaths resulted from shots fired by children under the age of six.
Safely storing your firearm can help reduce the risk of an accidental discharge and can prevent the injury and/or death of your child, their friends and others.
Remember these steps to safe storage:
- Use a gun lock.
- Store your gun in a gun safe.
- Store ammunition and guns in separate locations in your home.

Unsecured or unwanted guns in your home can attract crime. If you have a gun you would like to remove from your home, you can safely surrender it. Surrendering an unwanted firearm helps keep them off the streets and away from children.
As part of safely surrendering a firearm you should never bring it to a public location. Follow these steps:
Call the Tacoma Police Department’s non-emergency number at (253) 798-4721.
Be prepared to provide:
An officer will contact you and arrange to meet you for pickup of the surrendered firearm.
- Your name
- Contact information: telephone number and address
- Reason for surrender
The gun will be checked to ensure:
Once the firearm has been received and undergone testing it will be marked for destruction.
- It hasn’t been part of a crime
- It isn’t stolen
