Seeking a Food Waste Prevention Specialist AmeriCorps Member

The Environmental Services Department is seeking a Food Waste Prevention Specialist AmeriCorps member to join their team from February 16 – August 15, 2018. The Food Waste Prevention Specialist will develop and implement a plan that will help the City of Tacoma achieve its goal to divert or recycle 70% of its waste by 2028. The member will engage in research as well as community outreach and education to increase knowledge about food waste prevention, and give recommendations on food waste prevention to commercial and residential sectors.

To apply, read the full position description, complete the AmeriCorps application and submit a cover letter and resume to sustainability@cityoftacoma.org. Applications close on January 21, 2018. Interviews will be held January 25 – 26, 2018.

City of Tacoma Leaves 2Good2Toss Network

As of March 31, 2017 the City has ended its membership in the 2good2toss online network. Since 2003, we've partnered with 2good2toss to prevent still-usable items in good condition from premature disposal. 2good2toss works to keep good items out of the garbage and available to be reused. In recent years however, with the rise of new apps and websites that offer easy donation or resale, Tacoma's  participation numbers have gone down. The City is proud to have sponsored this service. We thank the 2good2toss program for its excellent support, leadership and contribution to sustainability, and appreciate our members for their efforts to reuse and reduce waste.

Residents can continue to reuse and recycle household and other items using online services. While we can't endorse any of these, some of the ones we know of include:

Note: In acknowledging these apps and websites, the City is not endorsing them.

Green Events Program Recycling Aids

Many community events held in Tacoma are certified through the City's Green Events Program. These events often need people to help out by monitoring recycle stations and engaging with attendees about proper recycling. If you would like to be notified of upcoming opportunities to support Green events in Tacoma send an email to sustainability@cityoftacoma.org.
