There is currently not a mechanism in place to track the number of people experiencing homelessness, which makes it a unique issue. There is an estimated 400 single adults who seek shelter nightly in Tacoma, yet we believe that is a low representation of the actual number of people who are experiencing homelessness in Tacoma.
For unaccompanied adults, the three most commonly cited causes of homelessness are:
- Substance abuse
- Lack of affordable housing
- Mental illness
