City of Tacoma Awarded With New COPS Grant by U.S. Department of Justice

The City of Tacoma was awarded a $3,409,753 federal grant to fund 10 police officer salaries and benefits for three years, the Attorney General's Office announced today. The U.S. Department of Justice Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant award start date is Sept. 1, 2014, and the City can be reimbursed for allowable and approved expenditures made on or after this date.  The grant will not require a local cash match, and positions covered by the grant must enhance the City's community policing strategy.

“Working with our residents and forming partnerships with the people we serve is the basis of how we approach policing in Tacoma,” said Mayor Marilyn Strickland. “We are pleased to receive this grant from the U.S. Department of Justice and thank them for their continued support and recognition of our City's community-oriented policing efforts.”

The City’s application received the highest rating in the state of Washington, making the City one of only 10 in the state to receive COPS grant funding from the U.S. Department of Justice. Thirty-seven applied.

“As we continue working to improve the way we respond to the needs of our community, while ensuring that we are managing our budget in a responsible and fiscally sustainable fashion, these funds will be very helpful," said City Manager T.C. Broadnax.

"This is very good news," said Police Chief Don Ramsdell. "We look forward to working with the U.S. Department of Justice in this productive partnership to further our community policing efforts."
