Bates Technical College Martin Luther King  Celebration “The Right to Dream” by Living Voices

Join us as we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with a Living Voices performance. You’ll hear the story of a young African American student growing up in a small town in Mississippi on the brink of the American Civil Rights movement. Watch as the performer brings to life the issues of civil rights at that time, and helps you understand how the fight against prejudice has shaped our history.

Students can enjoy a $1 lunch special, $3 for general public.

The 9th Annual MLK Redeeming the Prophetic Vision Interfaith Service and Event

For this special service, Urban Grace will join with other congregations and community organizations to be reinvigorated and re-inspired to work for justice and peace. The service will include music and art from local artists and preaching from Dr. Dexter Gordon, Director of African American Studies at University of Puget Sound. A lunch and community service awards ceremony will follow the service in the Lower Temple.

The 9th Annual MLK Unity Breakfast will be held on January 19, 2015 to recognize and celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King and his historic civic leadership that inspired a nation to strive for equality. Fredricka Whitfield will give the keynote address at this year's MLK Unity Breakfast. The breakfast will also feature performances by local talent.

Advance tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 for UW Tacoma student admission and $10 for children age 10 and younger.

Washington State History Museum - Are You A Change Maker?

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the Washington State History Museum will look at change making and diversity in children’s books. Join a panel of Northwest children’s book authors, illustrators, and scholars as they discuss change making and ideas of diversity as portrayed in children’s stories.

Add a picture of what you feel exemplifies our community and ideas of change making to the “Community of All Colors Wall” that will be on display in our Grand Lobby for the week.

Short stories of one to two paragraphs can also be attached to the various images. Are you unable to make it to the museum that day but still want to contribute to the wall? Send your images to schoolprograms@wshs.wa.gov and we will print and post them for you.

Admission is free to everyone.
